The opportunity 
 
Our Power and Gas Trading Team is growing to meet our strategic needs and help drive solutions offered to our customers. We are expanding our presence in Houston, Texas, through TC Energy Marketing, a non-regulated affiliate Power and Emissions marketing and trading business, adding to our high-performance team to help us grow, manage risk and optimize the portfolio.

We are seeking a US Power and Gas commercial operations analyst who is responsible for understanding and coordinating various settlement functions.  Daily activities include coordination and analysis of positions and settlement processes, running and tracking daily PnL, validating pricing marks/curves, reviewing trade confirmations and validating accurate recording in ETRM.  Other activities include supporting the monthly financial close, as well as producing reports for use by the Accounting, Finance and Trading organizations as needed, conducting financial analysis on energy markets, contributing to new and existing products to increase wholesale market presence and create a competitive advantage.  


What you’ll do

 

  • Develop and maintain an advanced level of knowledge and understanding of the competitive energy markets, including Fuels and Power
  • Assist in establishing and running routine processes for verification of settlements, daily and monthly P&L reporting and variance analysis
  • Coordinating all activities related to owned and contracted generation with the local Independent System Operator or RTO while providing data analysis and reporting to support internal and external requirements as they relate to Generation, Load, ISO settlements or long-term power contracts 
  • Validation and reconciliation of energy and non-energy activity for each ISO region in which we are a market participant
  • Address new requests: understand the core question being asked, capture needed data, build models, validate assumptions, perform analyses
  • The ability to understand the trade capture/modeling of complex non-standard transactions
  • Daily verification of transactional activity
  • Ensure accurate reporting and working with the appropriate teams to communicate identified issues and necessary adjustments/corrections
  • Run and Track PnL for End of Day, observing and correcting anomalies related to positions, prices and marking of the book. Provide EOD estimates and reconcile variances versus actuals for Power cash market
  • Assist in uploading and validating curves
  • Review trade confirmations and ensure all positions are correctly recorded in the ETRM by validating against the clearing house daily statement.
  • Provide support as needed to manager of credit counterparty risk regarding controls, limits, new counterparties
  • Track positions and monitor related limits
  • Manage master data in ETRM such as new trade locations/prices, counterparties, and other configuration data as needed to support the desk and downstream mid and back-office processes
  • Interact between energy trading and other functional groups that provide support to the business, such as accounting, credit, risk, tax, contracts.
  • Assist in entering and validating shaped/marketing deals from origination
  • Support Risk/Settlement manager and Controller/Accounting and other management in regular finance reporting, risk management processes and management reporting, including reviewing month end estimate from Accounting for the GAAP Accrual to validate data and confirm results, tying back to Trading PnL and providing any necessary explanations for variances versus First of Month and Budget
  • Identify areas of improvement for the desk related to daily and monthly processes

 

Minimum qualifications

 

  • Undergraduate degree required in Accounting, Finance, Business, Engineering or related discipline
  • 3+ Years prior industry experience in energy trading, settlement, risk and/or accounting
  • Experience performing wholesale power market settlements, position analysis, margin accruals and reporting
  • Experience performing P&L variance analyses
  • Experience interfacing with traders, mid-office accounting and operations to develop efficient communications and capture all relevant data for valuation, exposure tracking and reporting
  • Familiarity with presentation/effective data visualization
  • Expertise with MS Office applications
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Self-Motivated and highly organized team player, with attention to detail
  • Experience and knowledge in Financial Accounting or Financial Statements
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to solve new and complex problems quickly
  • Ability to identify and implement process improvement opportunities
  • Strong ability to work closely with peers in a teamwork environment

 

Preferred qualifications

 

  • Demonstrated in depth knowledge of the wholesale electricity markets, wholesale fuels markets and the associated infrastructure supporting those trading marketplaces
  • Extensive knowledge of North American RTO/ISO market constructs, rules and operations
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including experience with SQL, VBA, Python
